New ways of living at Port Nikau
Port Nikau has been carefully designed to suit the changing needs of families, couples and retirees by offering a range of housing types across the new waterfront community, each designed for different lifestyles and needs. This article explains the unique features of each of these options, so you can plan the best housing option for you.
Standard homes
New Zealanders are most familiar with traditional standalone houses on individual sections, which give you the flexibility to create a private outdoor living area, and give you space for a garage or extra parking. You own the land title, and you’ve got room for landscaping and a garden, or whatever matters to you.
These homes work well if you want backyard privacy, and the opportunity to add your own touches over time. Stage 1A sections are available now with house and land packages through local builders, or you can buy the land and build with your own builder.
Terrace housing
Terrace homes sit somewhere between standalone homes and apartments. You own your dwelling and a small section of land, but you’re connected to neighbours on one or both sides.
The benefit here is lower maintenance than a standard house, and you still have direct ground-floor access and often a small outdoor space. This is great for people who are looking for relatively independent living without quite as much upkeep. Terrace housing at Port Nikau will come in later stages of the development as the community grows.
Apartments
Multi-level apartment buildings are an exciting feature of Port Nikau as they are few and far between in Whangārei. An apartment offers a great opportunity to live a low-maintenance lifestyle without worrying about maintaining lawns, gardens or housing exteriors. You’ll also be part of a body corp who will manage things like building maintenance.
Waterfront apartments are a key feature of Port Nikau to maximise the amazing views and harbourside environment. They provide easy access to the marina and town centre, aimed at people who prioritise location and convenience over space – downsizers, professionals, or anyone who’d rather spend weekends on the water than maintaining a property.
Design and build of the apartments is planned at a later stage in the development, with works expected to start around 2028. If you’re weighing up whether to buy a house now or wait for apartments, here’s what to consider.
Choosing what works
The right housing type depends on what you value most. Space and independence? Choose a traditional standalone home. Convenience and harbour views? Opt for apartments. Something in between? Terraced housing might be a great option.
Stage 1A is focused on more traditional house and land packages on individual land titles, and other housing options will come available in later stages. Wondering whether to buy a house now or wait for apartments? Read more about the timing considerations here.
