Guide to Whangarei’s best nature walks
Whangārei City is nestled amongst beautiful hill ranges and reserves, creating the perfect outdoor playground to explore, walk, run or climb, all just minutes from the city centre.
Whether you’re after a peaceful bush walk, a family-friendly loop or a bit of a climb with a rewarding view, Whangārei has plenty of nature trails to explore, with many just minutes from Port Nikau. Most tracks are well-maintained and easy to access, with a mix of short, easy strolls and longer trails for those looking to get the heart rate up. Here are a few of our favourites.
Hātea Loop
This is a great starting point, a flat, easy, just over 4km walk that loops around the Whangārei Town Basin. It’s ideal for walking, running or cycling and includes public art, sculptures, and a boardwalk that hugs the waterfront. It’s also close to cafés and galleries, so you can pair your walk with a coffee or lunch stop.
Parihaka Summit Track
For something more challenging, the climb up to the summit of Mt Parihaka rewards you with panoramic views of the city, harbour and coastline. It’s steep in parts but well worth the effort. The track winds through native bush and holds deep cultural significance; it’s the site of one of the largest pā in Aotearoa.
A.H. Reed Memorial Kauri Walk
This short loop takes you through a beautiful stand of mature kauri trees. The canopy walk is a highlight, giving you a unique perspective among the treetops. It’s an easy walk that connects to other nearby trails if you’re keen to keep going.
Whangārei Falls
An absolute must-do. Just a 10-minute drive from the city, this 26m waterfall is one of Whangārei’s most photographed landmarks. There’s a loop track that takes you from the top of the falls to the base and back again, surrounded by native bush and birdsong.
Mt Manaia Track
Further out, near Whangārei Heads, the climb to Mt Manaia is steep but unforgettable. The jagged rock formations and sweeping views across Bream Bay make this a favourite with locals and visitors alike. It’s a good one for a weekend outing, just bring decent shoes and plenty of water.
